Manchester United’s 5 Greatest Last Minute Winners
[wp_ad_camp_2]
Following Anthony ‘Waste of Money’ Martial’s last minute winner against Everton in the FA Cup semi-final last weekend, we decided to compile a list of the five greatest last minute goal scored by United in the Premier League era. Let the countdown begin…
5. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer vs Liverpool, 1999
This one isn’t always one that people remember, but it was certainly significant. It was Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s last-gasp winner against bitter rivals Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup in that famous treble-winning season. Trailing 1-0 courtesy of a 50th minute goal by Michael Owen, United equalized in the 88th minute through Andy Cole, and in the dying moments, Solksjaer coolly finished to keep the treble dream alive. WHAT A MOMENT.
4. Federico Macheda vs Aston Villa, 2009
Liverpool had gone ahead of Man United in the table the previous day – a win was needed and United did start off brightly taking a 1-0 lead, but were back on the ropes and trailing 2-1 soon. Ronaldo equalized brilliantly, then in the 93rd minute, 17 year old Federico Macheda turned on the edge of the box and curled a sublime effort into the goal. Though his United career did not go as planned, he will always be remembered for this momentous effort that brought United back to the top of the table and eventually led them to the title.
3. Robin Van Persie vs Man City, 2012
After the previous season, where we had lost the title on goal difference, revenge was needed, and it was taken in incredible fashion. In a crucial derby, after giving away a two-goal lead, United were given a free kick, and Robin Van Persie smashed it home. For many young United fans, this was one of the best last minute winners ever.
2. Steve Bruce vs Sheffield Wednesday, 1993
Manchester United had thrown away the title the year before. United and Aston Villa were neck and neck in the title race, with just six games to go. This match was a must-win. Trailing 1-0 at home, Steve Bruce scored two smashing headers to put United in the driving seat for the title charge. This game was a pivotal moment in the journey to Fergie’s first ever title with Man Utd.
1. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer vs Bayern Munchen, 1999
There’s really no contest when it comes to United’s greatest all-time last minute winner. Probably the most famous moment in United’s folklore, this magical night at the Nou Camp ended with not one but two last minute goals. Bayern’s name was already on the cup when Teddy Sheringham turned in a Giggs miskick to level the match. Just when everybody thought it was going to extra time, United won a corner. Beckham swung it in, and Solskjaer toe poked it into the net following a missed attempt from Sheringham. United’s fans went wild, and the treble was completed in the most extraordinary manner possible. Football…bloody hell!
