STARTING XI: This is how United should line-up against Liverpool tonight

[wp_ad_camp_2]

The match-day squad has been confirmed for tonight’s do-or-die Europa League second-leg clash against Liverpool. Herrera and Blind are out, whilst Valencia and Borthwick-Jackson are back in the squad.

Here’s how I’d like to see United line up:

United need to take control of the game as early as possible, and can’t afford to play a patient, possession game with a 2-0 aggregate defecit to overturn.

Following Schweinsteiger’s influential cameo against West Ham at the weekend (and despite my concerns about his overall contribution so far) I’d like to see the German start, alongside Schneiderlin for some full-on Schmidfield action. That means dropping Carrick and Fellaini to the bench – populist changes perhaps, and probably not what the ever-obstinate Van Gaal will choose to do, but that’s what I’d like to see.

Up-front, Martial should be leading the line, with Rashford available as an impact sub if we need him. This means we’ll need a good performance from Memphis on the left, but it’s impossible to predict whether we’ll get one as his inconsistent form continues.

Without Blind at the back to ping accurate long balls forward, we’ll need maximum energy from young full-backs Varela and Borthwick-Jackson to give our counter-attacks penetration and pace, and they’ll need to be at their best to nullify the threats from Moreno and Clyne.
