POLL: Who Should Be the New United Captain?

A new season, a new manager, a new captain to lead the troops…

Who should that man be? I don’t think we have too many candidates – people have mentioned Johnny Evans and Darren Fletcher, but I can’t see LVG handing the privilege to either of these players, who may realistically struggle to be first choice picks when the transfer window shuts in a few weeks time.

A few weeks ago, when James Rodriquez was showing the world what a good player he is, we ran a poll asking whether we should try and swap Rooney plus money for Rodriquez, and 82% voted yes.

If we ran the poll again today, some may have a change of heart, but it’s true that Rodriquez performed on the world stage at just 22, a stage where Rooney has continually failed to shine. In my opinion, Real Madrid have done some very shrewd business buying him now at £63 million, but I won’t be complaining should that allow us to buy Di Maria, who would be a brilliant signing for United.

Having said that, Rooney is still a very good footballer, and if he is very much in LVG’s plans, I think it would be a smart move on his part to make him our club captain. He is unquestionably a leader; a passionate player who will get the best out of his team-mates. Indeed, the captaincy could give him the impetus to take his game to the next level in the final few years of his career. Do you agree? Have your say in our poll…
