As a New Year Begins, The Old United Return

Sir Alex, watching from the stands on his 75th birthday, must have felt deeply nostalgic as United came from 1-0 down to win 2-1 in dramatic style with goals from Martial, and 90 seconds later Pogba, in the closing minutes of the game. As a chorus of “We’ll never die, we’ll never die” rang out around Old Trafford, there was an overwhelming sense of a club rediscovering the belief and spirit that Fergie so famously instilled.

Of course, we should have been 1-0 up at the break, with Ibra athletically converting Martial’s cross, only to be incorrectly disallowed by yet another terrible refereeing decision.

We hit the post twice, once from an incredibly up-for-it Anthony Martial, and later the overhead kick by the ever-improving Pogba. In the second half, we were denied a definite penalty thanks to the continued incompetence of Lee Mason.

It was definitely edge-of-your-seat stuff, and felt very much like the old days are coming back to the Theatre of Dreams, with Mourinho’s red army playing very much the United way.

One of the highlights has to be the performance of Martial, who had his best performance of the season, and if he can take that form into the next 4 months, United will be very difficult to deal with for opposing defenders.

I personally thought Smalling looked a little shaky at the back, and Blind was beaten for pace too often down that left side, but overall, what a great way to end 2016!

Happy New Year to all our followers – the future is bright, the future is RED.
